Should I Give My Baby A Pacifier?
Health Canada recognizes that when used safely, a pacifier provides real benefit to both baby and caregiver, as it can help soothe a baby instantly.1 Sucking is a natural way for babies to self-sooth, and pacifiers can help:
- settle a baby who is fussing
- keep your baby contented between feedings
- calm a hungry baby during the few minutes it may take mom to prepare a bottle or get ready for nursing
- provide comfort during vaccinations or check-ups
Pacifiers can help a baby go to sleep more easily, and researchers have also found an association between their use during sleep and a reduced risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).2 When it comes to pacifiers your baby does the choosing, and it may take up to four pacifiers on average before you find the one best suited to your baby. Safe use is key. Never tie or hang a pacifier around a baby’s neck, as this could be a choking hazard. Inspect the nipple, ring and handle of the pacifier daily for any signs of wear or tear that could be caused by age or exposure to heat, as loose or broken bits could be a danger.3
