Tips for Choosing a Baby Carrier
A baby carrier that you can strap on or a sling can be good options as they leave your hands free while keeping baby close and happy. Studies show that babies who are carried, as opposed to being wheeled in a stroller, cry less.1 This may be because your scent or physical presence soothes them, or because the baby carrier affords them a good view of what is going on around them and keeps them occupied. As a result, they have more ‘quiet alert time’ when they are more receptive to their surroundings and learn through what they can see and hear. Proximity to their parent also increases interaction and enhances the baby/parent bond. It’s also a great way for moms to be mobile and get out and about without having to worry about getting a stroller into the car or navigating a stroller up and down stairs or onto crowded public transportation.
Research the different makes and pick one that has a high safety record. Ensure that when wearing it, it is properly positioned. Safety is most important. If baby is reaching out to grab things, stay away from store displays or anything that could prove a danger. If you are wearing a baby carrier at home, this may include the kitchen where there are heat sources and sharp tools that may be easy for baby to grasp.
