What Are the Best Toys for My Baby?

Toys are essential to your infant’s development: they stimulate through sound and colour, and encourage movement and coordination. The best toys engage your infant, help develop fundamental skills and are safe.

Safety:1

  • Avoid toys that are small enough to be swallowed, or have pieces on them – such as buttons, plastic eyes or string – that detach and could be a choking hazard.
  • There should be no sharp edges and the toy should be able to withstand a lot of wear and tear without breaking.
  • Be discerning with hand-me-down toys as they may not meet current safety standards. For example, toys made before 1978 may have paint that contains lead.
  • Follow manufacturers’ age recommendations and assembly instructions, when applicable.
  • Check government lists to see if the toy has been recalled.
  • Inspect toys regularly for breakage.
