Is Intercourse Safe During Pregnancy?
If your pregnancy is developing normally sex remains safe throughout your pregnancy.1 Your baby is protected by the amniotic fluid in your uterus and will not be affected by sexual activity. Most experts recommend against anal sex during this time and caution that during oral sex, in rare cases, air blown into the vagina could block a blood vessel, which could lead to serious complications.2 Orgasms do not trigger labour and although you may feel contractions, these are not labour contractions. Caution is always best, however, and if you are at risk of a preterm labour or are experiencing bleeding or discharge, or the placenta partly or completely covers your cervical opening, sex is best postponed until after your baby has arrived. Some women may have little sexual desire during this time and that is normal, given their hormonal fluctuations and the stress pregnancy places on their body.
