Should I Take Prenatal Classes?

Classes can provide reassurance and demystify the birthing process by leading you through breathing and relaxation exercises aimed to ease anxiety and discomfort during labour. They provide information on prenatal and postpartum issues, as well as the day-to-day care of your newborn.

Many new parents take childbirth education classes during the third trimester of pregnancy, generally around the seven-month mark, although there are classes that start earlier. There are a variety of classes to choose from, and most important will be choosing a class that aligns with your philosophy and provides a comfortable and supportive atmosphere. Speak to your health care provider and other moms to get recommendations. The group facilitator should have certification and be approachable. The class size should be small enough to provide individual care and ensure you get your questions answered. Classes should also be thorough enough for you to grasp the new skills you will need with confidence and without feeling rushed.
